Prince William County General District Court judges conduct hearings for civil, traffic, criminal
misdemeanors and preliminary hearings for felony cases. The general district court handles most traffic
violations. The General District Court does not conduct jury trials. A judge hears all cases in this court.
Jury trials are held only in Circuit Court, as provided by the State Constitution. The general district court also
hears minor criminal cases known as misdemeanors and conducts preliminary hearings for more serious
criminal cases called felonies.
General district courts have exclusive authority to hear civil cases with claims of $4,500 or less and
share authority with the circuit courts to hear cases with claims between $4,500 and $15,000. Examples of
civil cases are landlord and tenant disputes, contract disputes and personal injury actions.
Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court handles criminal and traffic violations by juveniles and
serious internal family relations problems. Other sections of the court enforce the judges' orders
including probation and child support, and assist in finding temporary homes for children under court
supervision.
